Maria Makrides, PhD, FAA, FAHMS

Dr. Maria Makrides is Deputy Director at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and the Theme Leader for SAHMRI Women and Kids, which is based at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide, Australia. Makrides’ work has been responsible for changes in international policy regarding the safe composition of infant foods, national and international guidance on diet and supplementation during pregnancy, and infant feeding guidelines to minimize the risk of childhood allergies. She is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science.  In 2018 Makrides was awarded the Alexander Leaf Distinguished Scientist Award for Lifetime Achievement by the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL).
